Understanding the hammam

What is the Moroccan hammam?

A wellness ritual inspired by Moroccan traditions. Hover over the ingredients to see where they come from and what they do.

The hammam is a communal steam bath, a descendant of the Roman baths, adopted and spread across the Muslim world from the 7th century. In Arabic, “hammam” comes from the root ḥ-m-m: “to heat”.

In Morocco, every neighbourhood has one, often next to the mosque and the bread oven, with which it shares a furnace. People go to wash deeply — but also to meet: it is a social space, especially for women, and a must before a wedding or a big occasion.

The space traditionally has three rooms — warm, hot, very hot. You settle on the floor, let the steam open your pores, apply the black soap, and then comes the vigorous Kessa-glove scrub that literally lifts off the dead skin.

What is the Moroccan hammam?

What the hammam does for the body

Clear, smooth skin

The scrub removes dead cells and refines the skin's texture.

Better circulation

Heat widens the vessels; friction stimulates micro-circulation.

Relaxed muscles

Steam and massage release tension and soreness.

Less stress

A slow, screen-free ritual that lowers mental pressure.

Better sleep

Deep relaxation after the hammam supports restorative sleep.

Clearer breathing

Hot, humid steam helps to clear the airways.

⚠ The hammam is a wellness treatment, not medical care. If you have a heart condition, blood-pressure issues, are pregnant or unsure, ask your doctor first.

FAQ

Everything to know before you come

What should I bring?

Nothing essential. Bring a swimsuit or underwear you don't mind getting wet. We provide the towels, black soap, Kessa glove, rhassoul clay, henna and argan oil.

Is the hammam women only?

Yes. YallaHammam is a service designed for women: we take you to a women's hammam, run by women. In Morocco, women and men never share a hammam — each has their own. You can come on your own, with friends or with family. You'll share the warm room with other women — it's a lively communal place, not a private suite, and that's the point.

Where do we meet? You don't have a venue?

That's right — we have no premises of our own: we take you to a genuine neighbourhood hammam in Essaouira. We meet you at your riad / hotel in the medina, or at an agreed meeting point. The exact address is sent on WhatsApp once your booking is confirmed.

How long does the experience last?

Around 1 h 30 to 2 h in total: hammam and body scrub, a coffee-and-clay body treatment, then a relaxing argan-oil massage.

Is it hygienic?

Yes. The hammam is cleaned between guests and every person gets a fresh kit (glove, towels). We work with hammams known for their cleanliness.

I've never been to a hammam — will it be awkward?

Not at all. Your guide shows you each step and stays on hand throughout. Most of our guests are trying a hammam for the first time.

Can my children come? What if I'm pregnant?

Young children are welcome with their mum. If you are pregnant, please check with your doctor; we adapt the treatment (gentle heat, no abdominal massage).

How do I pay?

Cash (MAD) on the day, or by bank transfer. Everything is confirmed in advance on WhatsApp, with no surprises.

Can I cancel?

Yes, free of charge up to 24 h before your appointment. Just let us know on WhatsApp.
