Essaouira in 2–3 Days: Where a Hammam Fits Your Itinerary
A relaxed plan for Morocco's windy Atlantic town — medina, ramparts, port, beach — with the best moment to slot in a traditional hammam.
Why Essaouira
Essaouira (old name Mogador) is a walled port town on Morocco's Atlantic coast, about 2.5 hours west of Marrakech. It is smaller, cooler and calmer than the imperial cities, with a UNESCO-listed 18th-century medina, Portuguese-style sea ramparts, a working fishing port, wide beaches and a steady trade wind that makes it a kitesurf capital. It is also famous for Gnaoua music and its June festival.
Day 1 — the medina
Walk the main axes (Avenue de l'Istiqlal, Rue de la Skala), the spice and jewellery souks, and the woodworkers' galleries carving fragrant thuya. Climb the Skala de la Ville ramparts at the north end for the cannon line and the Atlantic. Late afternoon: fresh fish grilled at the port. This is the ideal evening for a hammam — you have walked all day, and it sets you up for a long sleep.
Day 2 — port, beach, island views
Morning at the blue fishing port and the Sunday-to-any-day bustle of boats. Then the long beach south towards Diabat and the ruined Bordj el Bermil half-buried in sand. Windsurf or ride a horse or camel on the sand. Sunset drink facing the Îles Purpuraires.
Day 3 — cooperatives and day trips
Visit a women's argan cooperative on the road to Marrakech or Agadir to see the kernels pressed by hand. Optional: the Sidi Kaouki surf beach, or vineyards inland.
Fitting in the hammam
The best slot is the late afternoon or early evening of a day you have spent walking — typically day 1 or day 2. Allow two hours. Book a day ahead in high season (spring, summer, festival week). With YallaHammam we meet you at your riad in the medina, so it costs you no navigation and no logistics; message us with your dates and group size and we confirm on WhatsApp.
